It is important to understand the ways in which a product can have defects. This allows you to determine how your product failed and why it ended up causing damage.
Three types of product defect
Cornell Law School defines a product defect. There are three primary forms of product defect. They include:
- Defects in design
- Defects in manufacturing
- Defects in marketing
Design defects imply there is a fundamental issue in the base concept of the product design. In other words, it does not matter how well-constructed the product ends up. There is a flaw in the design that will make it unsafe even if every part of manufacturing goes according to plan.
On the other hand, manufacturing defects happen during the production stage. Most often, only a portion of products end up defective in this scenario. The rest of the products react the way they should and do not pose a risk to consumers.
Finally, defects in marketing involve how the product ends up packaged and presented to the customer. The product itself is safe in both design and production. But a defect exists in the packaging that creates a danger. For example, the instructions might not include pertinent warnings such as leaving a product out of direct sunlight. Without knowing of these dangers, customers can easily injure themselves or others by accident. It is important to understand which of the three product defects you are facing if you end up harmed.
